Interview: Lawrence Smyth

We caught up with TNT Racing's fastest racer to find out a little more about what makes him tick. Lawrence is originally from Christchurch, New Zealand and now lives in Sydney, Australia.

Q:  How long have you been on iRacing?

A:  Joined 09/05/2010, but took a break half-way through 2010, so I lost a few months there.

Q:  Did you have other race simulator experience before iRacing?

A:  I didn’t have a PC until recently so only raced console games such as Forza 2 and 3 and the Grand Turismo series. I’m a fan of pretty much any racing game.

Q:  What progression did you take to get to your A license?

A:  Started in the Solstice, then moved to V8 super cars for a little bit, then to Star Mazda. I didn’t really have time to run another series so I just used time trials for the Corvette.

Q:  What about real-life racing experience?

A:  Had a test in 125 karts and was set to start in a league but getting accepted into a full-time degree program put it on hold. Still love the odd karting day and would love to get into some sort of motorsport but just don’t really have the time or money at the moment.

Q:  Do you feel the real-life experience helps you on iRacing (or vice-versa)?

A:  I certainly find coming from iRacing helped my outlook on how to attack a karting track in real life, as far as good lines and getting up to speed quickly.

Q:  What’s your favorite iRacing track or track/car combo?

A:  Love Mid Ohio with the Star Mazda, great sense of speed and flow. They feel absolutely made for each other.

Q:  What’s your favorite iRacing car/series?

A:Have come to love the Star Mazda and its community, It has really taught me a lot about setups and race-craft. Definitely looking to move to the F1 soon as I love the speed, just need to read a lot of books on F1 car tinkering.

Q:  Who is your racing hero?

A:  I would have to say Mark Webber, for being an Australian in such an elite form of motor racing for such along time.

Q:  What’s the best/most fun race you’ve ever had in iRacing?

A:  I guess a Star Mazda race I had at Road Atlanta Last year. I started on pole position managed to spin on the 3rd corner lap 1, and got back on track in 18th position. I kept my cool and started making my way up through the field with some great battles and clean driving from all racers. Made it right back up to second and had a great fight for first, finally passing him with 2 laps to go.

Q:  What’s your current racing rig setup?

A:  Logitech G27 wheel and pedals on a wheel stand Pro, in front of 27” LED monitor. PC specs : i7 2600k @ 4.2 GHz, MSI P67 motherboard, Gigabyte GTX580, 8 GB memory.

Q:  What else do you do for fun?

A:  I play a few sports like soccer and snowboarding when I have time. Used to compete in street skateboarding too. Love gaming, especially first person shooters.

Q:  What do you do for a living?

A:  Actor/ Brand ambassador when I don’t have an acting job.

Q:  What are your goals for this season?

A:  To finish in the top ten overall Star Mazda championship and to get my iRating around the 3000 mark.

Q:  Who is/are your main rival(s)?

A:  Any one else gunning for the top ten! Have had great battles with a lot of great racers. Also anyone from RTR :D

Q:  How has being a member of TNT Racing helped you?

A:  It really motivated me to put in more practice and push myself to the best of my ability. Setup-wise, I am not too fancy with a tuning the cars, I only know basics and how I like the car to feel. Having such knowledgeable team mates has really helped me learn more about the car.

Q:  If you had the chance, what real-life race car would you want to drive? At what track?

A:  It would have to be a formula one car anywhere!
